 The Memento Mori Matchbox

  MP4 with audio track

  - Created - 20 August 2022

The original piece was discovered in 1874 in the villa "of masons" in Pompeii. This mosaic is full of symbolism. It illustrates the phrase "Memento Mori".

A skull recalls the ultimate destiny of man. On the left, the clothes recall the wealth in ancient times. On the right, the rags refer to poverty.

The whole is supported and balanced by the square and the plumb line of the mason found on the Roman sarcophagi.

The mosaic also presents The Wheel 'Fortuna' which, when it turns, can make the rich become poor, and vice versa.
